Planting zones by state
USDA plant hardiness zones for every state from the 2023 map, with the range of zones found in each and the zones for major cities.
Why a state has more than one zone
Zones follow winter cold, which changes with latitude, elevation and distance from oceans and large lakes. That is why a big state like Texas or California can cover several zones, and why mountain towns are often a zone or more colder than the valleys nearby. For the most precise answer, look up your own ZIP code.
The warmest and coldest places
On the 2023 map data, the coldest zones (1a to 2a) are all in Alaska. The warmest are in Puerto Rico and Hawaii, which reach zones 12 and 13, while Florida, California and Hawaii have zone 11 ZIP codes. Use the state pages for the full range, the zones of major cities and example places in each zone.
Every zone on this site comes from the 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map data published by the PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University.
