How to measure: Multiply the length times the width to calculate the total square footage. If the area contains tree and shrubs, dont subtract for these. In the event that your area is an odd shape, simply break it into geometric figures (squares, rectangles and triangles). Remember, it is length times width for squares and rectangles; and ½ the base times the height for triangles.
Sample calculation: Lets say your planting area is a simple rectangle shaped slope of 30 x 60. This is a total of 1,800 square feet. You then decide to use Hahns ivy and plant them at 12" o.c. (on center). The ivy is delivered in a flat that contains 81 plants. Look up in the planting guide for the proper square footage. Divide the total square footage 1,800 by 81 which will give you 22 flats. Depending on the amount of trees and shrubs that need to be planted around, you may wish to round down slightly since you wont plant directly next to the trunk of the plants. Or, you may wish to use the extra plants for filling in and tightening up the spacing. This will aid in obtaining more complete coverage without having to wait for the ground cover to grow.
