Exceptional Shade Tree with a Variety of UsesAmerican Linden, also known as Basswood, is a popular specimen or shade tree. One would look terrific in your front or side yard. This stately tree begins pyramidal and becomes more gently rounded with maturity. Its large, heart-shaped leaves are serrated and a vibrant green, darker on top with lighter tones beneath. Fragrant cymes of yellow-hued blossoms dangle from the grey/brown branches in spring, an attractive lure to pollinators. In fact, Linden trees are sometimes so abundantly laden with bees in spring that the humming can be heard from quite a distance away! The flowers give way to small nutlets attached to 5-inch “wings” in late summer. As autumn approaches, the Linden’s foliage transitions to subtle yellow hues. American Linden will reach heights of 90 feet with a 45-foot spread. It’s fast-growing and quite hardy. Linden doesn’t mind a bit of drought and can adapt to a variety of soils and conditions. It’s also a versatile tree, with sap that can be made into syrup, and its lightweight wood valued for such items as shipping boxes. Bees cultivate the pollen for honey that is so prized it’s considered “gourmet”. If you’re considering a shade tree, why choose something that only provides shade? Choose an American Linden, a tree that provides shade, stately beauty…and so much more.* Outstanding shade tree * Fragrant flowers * Fast growing * Drought tolerant * Adaptable to a variety of soils * Wildlife interest.
