Prized for Enduring Color and Elegant Spring DisplayThundercloud Plum delivers a storm of color to your garden for three seasons. When Thundercloud wakes up from its winter sleep, it bursts out with a billow of pink blossoms, reminiscent of a cherry tree in full bloom. (This is why Thundercloud is often called the ‘cherry plum’.) Then, when the flowers have faded, deep plum-purple leaves emerge and provide a great shading canopy for the summer. In fall, the purple leaves stand in beautiful contrast to the jewel-box yellows and reds of other autumn leaves. Now, this is an ornamental plum, so fruit isn’t the main draw here. Even so, it will sometimes bear small fruits for you in the summer. They are edible, but if you leave them on the tree the birds will enjoy them far more than you probably will.Thundercloud Plum grows fast, quickly shooting up to 15 -25 feet. This is a true low maintenance tree. It is very hardy and will thrive just about anywhere. For the best purple leaf color, plant it in full sun – the leaves will be a chartreuse green if planted in too much shade. This tree is a perfect lawn tree, street tree, or lining your entry drive.
