Miniature ‘Orange’ with Year Round BloomsCalamondin oranges are little tricksters. They look like oranges, just smaller versions. They smell like oranges when they are in bloom. They juice like oranges when they are sliced. But all that enticing ‘orangeness’ gets tossed out the window when you taste one. The taste is much closer to a sour lime than a sweet orange!Calamondin fruit is most often used in cooking to take the place of lemon or lime. These are a great substitute for anything you would use a sour citrus for – fish, chicken, iced tea, Asian cuisine, baking, etc. In Florida in the 50’s Calamondin Orange trees were all the rage for the home landscape. You would often see stands selling a sweet lemonade-like drink made with Calamondin instead of lemons. They make a great marmalade, too. These trees have a nice shape which makes them standouts in the landscape or in the container. They are often used in ornamental bonsai. They can have flowers and fruit at the same time, so they make great specimens for greenhouse or indoor culture. When the trees are in bloom they will perfume your entire house.Nature Hills ships out large, established trees that are a minimum of three years old, have extensive branching and some of the largest root systems available. The sooner that you order, the sooner you can be enjoying the conversation-starting fruit from these beautiful trees.* Small, round sweet/sour fruit* Very cold-hardy* Great in containers* Great for cooking and juicing.

In summer time (July or August) you will have noticed that many large shoots have developed shooting out in all directions. Prune back these shoots back to the point where you are leaving about 5 leaves on that stem on the new growth it produced just this year. Now in late winter or very early spring before any new growth begins, go back to that same shoot that you left the 5 leaves on the plant last summer and shorten it up now leaving 2 or 3 buds from which it will grow this coming spring. Here is a really simple video showing the two pruning methods described above from the Royal Horticultural Society showing the correct procedure: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=242.
